EV Charger Levels for Clients in Central PA
The process of refueling conventional automobiles that run on gasoline is relatively straightforward, and it hasn’t changed much over the years. Since electric vehicles (EVs) are newer and slightly more complex, the refueling — or recharging —process is a little more in-depth.
Leer Electric, an expert in EV charger installation, offers clients professional services and products to accommodate their changing needs. Serving customers throughout the Central Pennsylvania area, including Harrisburg, York, Mechanicsburg, Carlisle, Hanover, and Dillsburg, we offer various EV charger levels, allowing clients to appropriately equip their homes or business. Learn about the differences between these charger levels and their applications to understand which one will best serve you.
About EV Charger Levels
The amount of time it takes to charge an EV is determined by the amount of electric charger used. There are three different levels of charging available for an EV; Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Each level delivers unique benefits, with a higher level of charging meaning a faster charging process.
Level 1 Charging: 120-Volt
Level 1 charging is the lowest of tiers when it comes to EV chargers. Level 1 EV chargers use a common 120-volt household outlet and add between three and five miles of range per hour to your EV. Every type of EV can be charged by a Level 1 charger, making it an ideal option for going just about anywhere. Although Level 1 charging is the slowest of all EV chargers, it can accommodate drivers who don’t travel far very frequently.
Level 2 Charging: 208-Volt to 240-Volt
Level 2 charging is the most widely used level for daily charging and can be installed in homes, commercial businesses, public facilities, and similar locations. Drivers can expect to receive between 12 and 80 miles of range per hour, depending on the power output of the Level 2 EV charger, and the vehicle’s maximum charge rate.
A Level 2 charger offers a much quicker charge rate compared to Level 1, as it can charge the vehicle up to 10 times faster. EV owners that plug their vehicle in overnight can expect it to be fully charged by the next morning, even if it was plugged in on a nearly empty battery.
Level 3 Charging: 400-Volt to 900-Volt (DC Fast Charge & Supercharging)
Of all the charging levels, Level 3 is by far the fastest, pumping out a recharge rate of three to 20 miles of range per minute. Level 3 EV chargers accomplish this feat by utilizing direct current (DC), while Levels 1 and 2 use alternating current (AC).
Because the voltage used for Level 3 chargers is much higher, they are not recommended for home use. Most Level 3 EV chargers are implemented in public locations for charging systems that many people utilize.
In many cases, the battery is the most important and expensive component of an EV. In other words, proper care of the battery is vital to maintain your EV for lasting use. The EV is in constant communication with the charger, always calculating how much power it accepts. Because of this, there is no threat of plugging an EV into a charging station that can deliver more power than the car can handle. This feature provides owners with added peace of mind.
